The active ingredient Capsimax

Capsimax is a concentrated extract of capsaicinoids, the natural compounds responsible for the pungency of red chili peppers (Capsicum annuum). Several studies have investigated the potential benefits of Capsimax in the area of weight management.

Increased resting energy expenditure (REE): A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study showed that taking 100 mg of Capsimax (equivalent to 2 mg of capsaicinoids) significantly increased REE in men. Participants experienced increased calorie burning within four hours of ingestion compared to the placebo group. No significant differences were observed in women.

Safety and tolerability: In an open-label study involving twelve healthy, overweight women, the tolerability of Capsimax was investigated at increasing doses of 2 mg to 10 mg of capsaicinoids over a period of six weeks. The results showed that Capsimax was well tolerated at these doses, with no significant changes in vital signs, blood counts, or adverse effects.

Appetite suppression and energy intake: Another study examined the effects of Capsimax on satiety and energy intake. The results suggested that taking Capsimax can reduce feelings of hunger and thus lower daily calorie intake.

In summary, these studies suggest that Capsimax, as a natural, well-tolerated ingredient, may support weight management by increasing resting energy expenditure and reducing hunger.

The active ingredient glucomannan

Glucomannan is a water-soluble fiber derived from the root of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac). Various scientific studies have investigated its potential health benefits, particularly with regard to weight loss, blood sugar control, and cholesterol reduction.

Weight loss: Several randomized controlled trials have investigated the effects of glucomannan on body weight. A meta-analysis of 14 studies found that glucomannan can lead to moderate weight loss in overweight and obese individuals, particularly when taken before meals. The proposed mechanism is that glucomannan swells in the stomach, creating a feeling of satiety and thus reducing calorie intake.

Blood sugar control : Glucomannan may also have positive effects on blood sugar regulation. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials showed that glucomannan supplementation can significantly reduce fasting blood glucose (FBG). This effect was particularly pronounced in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Glucomannan is thought to slow carbohydrate absorption, thus reducing postprandial blood sugar spikes.

Cholesterol reduction: Glucomannan intake has also been associated with improved blood lipid levels. A meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials found that glucomannan can significantly reduce total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). This lipid-lowering effect may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Safety and tolerability : Glucomannan is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. However, side effects such as bloating may occasionally occur. Due to its high water-binding capacity, it is important to take glucomannan with sufficient liquid to avoid the risk of esophageal or intestinal blockages.

In summary, current studies suggest that glucomannan supplementation may have positive effects on weight loss, blood sugar control, and cholesterol reduction. However, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting supplementation, especially if you have existing health problems or are taking medication.

The active ingredient choline

Choline is an essential nutrient that plays a key role in lipid metabolism. Several studies have investigated the extent to which choline supplementation can influence body weight and body composition.

Choline supplementation and weight loss: A study of 22 female taekwondo and judo athletes investigated the effects of one week of choline supplementation (2 g/day) on body composition. The results showed a significant reduction in body fat and body mass index (BMI) in the supplemented group compared to the control group. This suggests that choline supplementation may promote fat metabolism and contribute to rapid weight loss.

Choline intake and body weight: A one-year longitudinal study examined the relationship between changes in dietary choline intake and body weight. The results showed that increased choline intake was associated with a significant reduction in body weight and BMI. This suggests that higher choline intake may have positive effects on weight control.

Choline deficiency and fat accumulation: Animal studies have shown that choline deficiency can slow weight gain and reduce fat mass. However, a deterioration in liver health has also been observed, suggesting increased fat accumulation in the liver. Therefore, caution is advised, as choline deficiency, while reducing peripheral fat mass, can also have adverse effects on the liver.

Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that adequate choline intake may play a role in lipid metabolism and weight control. Both increased dietary choline intake and targeted supplementation may have beneficial effects on reducing body fat and BMI. However, it is important to note that extreme choline deficiencies can have negative effects on liver health. Therefore, consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended before initiating choline supplementation to assess individual needs and potential risks.

The active ingredient zinc

Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous metabolic processes and may play a role in weight management. Various studies have investigated the effects of zinc on body weight and body composition.

Zinc supplementation and weight loss: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 40 obese adults investigated the effects of daily zinc supplementation (30 mg) for 15 weeks in combination with a calorie-restricted diet. The results showed that the zinc group experienced significant reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference compared to the placebo group. Lower levels of inflammatory markers and insulin resistance were also observed.

Meta-analysis on zinc and body weight : A systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 randomized controlled trials with a total of 1,438 participants found that zinc supplementation can reduce body weight in overweight or obese, otherwise healthy individuals. However, the observed weight loss was modest, and the authors emphasized that further high-quality studies are needed to draw definitive conclusions.

Possible mechanisms: The positive effects of zinc on weight management could be due to several mechanisms:

Appetite regulation: Zinc influences the production of leptin, a hormone that controls satiety, and can thus reduce appetite.
Improve insulin sensitivity: Zinc plays a role in glucose metabolism and can reduce insulin resistance, which can promote fat loss.
Anti-inflammatory effect: Zinc has antioxidant properties and can reduce inflammation associated with obesity.

The active ingredient chromium

Chromium is an essential trace element that plays a role in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. There is particular debate about whether chromium supplementation can support weight loss.

Scientific studies and meta-analyses:

A 2019 meta-analysis: A study summarized 19 studies with a total of 1,316 overweight or obese participants. The results showed that chromium supplementation led to an average weight loss of 0.75 kg. A reduction in body mass index (BMI) of 0.40 and a reduction in body fat percentage of 0.68% were also observed. However, the authors emphasized that the clinical relevance of these modest effects remains unclear and further studies are needed.

Cochrane Review 2013: This systematic review analyzed nine randomized controlled trials of chromium picolinate in overweight or obese adults. The results showed a small but significant weight loss of approximately 1 kg compared to placebo. However, the authors noted that the evidence is of low quality and the clinical significance of this weight reduction remains questionable.

Possible mechanisms of action:

Chromium is believed to improve insulin action, leading to better regulation of blood sugar levels. This could theoretically reduce appetite and promote fat metabolism. However, the exact mechanisms and their impact on body weight are not yet fully understood.

The active ingredient green tea extract

Green tea extract, obtained from the leaves of the green tea plant (Camellia sinensis), contains bioactive compounds such as catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and caffeine. These components have been studied for their potential effects on weight loss and fat burning.

Scientific findings:
Metabolism and fat burning: Studies suggest that the catechins and caffeine contained in green tea extract can stimulate energy metabolism and increase fat burning. A meta-analysis of eleven studies showed that green tea consumption can significantly reduce body weight and help maintain weight.

Combination with physical activity: Research suggests that taking green tea extract in conjunction with physical activity can increase fat burning. One study found that men who consumed green tea extract before exercise burned 17% more fat than those who did not.

The active ingredient guarana

Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a plant native to the Amazon region whose seeds are known for their high caffeine content. Various studies have investigated its potential for weight loss.

Animal studies: A 2019 study examined the effects of guarana on rats fed a high-fat diet. The results showed that guarana supplementation reduced weight gain, insulin resistance, and adipokine dysregulation. This was attributed to the activation of brown adipose tissue, leading to increased energy burning.

Another 2018 study confirmed these findings by showing that guarana promoted mitochondrial biogenesis in mice fed a high-fat diet, resulting in increased energy expenditure and a reduction in fat accumulation.

Human studies : Human research is limited. One study combined guarana with other ingredients, such as ma huang, and found that participants experienced greater weight and fat loss. However, because multiple active ingredients were combined, it is difficult to isolate the specific effect of guarana.

Possible mechanisms of action: The positive effects of guarana on weight could be due to several factors:

  • High caffeine content: Guarana contains more caffeine than coffee beans, which can stimulate metabolism and increase fat burning.
  • Activation of brown adipose tissue: Stimulation of brown adipose tissue leads to increased calorie burning.
